About
the LGBTQ* Collective of Manitoba
The LGBTQ* Collective of Manitoba's mission is to support the health, safety, and well-being of Manitoba's Francophone 2ELGBTQ+ community. It conducts research on the community's needs and organizes social, cultural, and educational activities to promote inclusion and growth.
Jonas, Arielle, Jen, and Joel share their perspectives on the joys and challenges of being doubly minoritized in this excerpt from the documentary Cela était notre message (2019) by director Gabriel Tougas.
MISSION
The LGBTQ* Collective of Manitoba has existed since January 2019, and its mission is to support the health and well-being of Manitoba's French-speaking 2ELGBTQ+ community, while ensuring its safety, both in terms of sexual orientation and gender identity as well as linguistically and culturally.
The Collective's main project is conducting a needs analysis as mandated by the founding assembly of January 23, 2019. The results of the first phase of the needs analysis project were unveiled in June 2020 with the release of the report "Des nôtres - une analyse des besoins des personnes LGBTQ2S d'expression française du Manitoba" (PDF). Rich in knowledge about the increased risk of discrimination and stigmatization and their consequences on the health and well-being of our community members, "Des nôtres" was subsequently the subject of numerous presentations to community, school, and university audiences.
The phase II of the needs analysis project began in December 2022 and focuses on the specific needs of adolescents aged 14 to 18. The challenges related to the transition to parenthood are at the heart of phase III of the needs analysis project. Finally, phase IV, planned for 2025-2026, will focus on the experiences of seniors.
Alongside the needs analysis project, the Collective regularly organizes social, cultural, and educational activities in accordance with its mission. See below for the roundtables, 5 to 7s, and gatherings planned for 2024-2025.

LANGUAGE
Manitoba has 84,180 Francophones, about 7% of the total population. Nearly three-quarters of us were born in the province; 15% come from elsewhere in Canada and 11% from abroad.
We are concentrated in urban areas in the historic Francophone neighborhoods of St-Boniface, St-Vital, and St-Norbert and also in the Anglophone neighborhoods of Elmwood and Fort Rouge (Osborne Village).
Outside of Winnipeg, traditionally Francophone (sometimes also Métis) rural villages and municipalities are numerous, especially in the south of the province: Saint-Lazare, La Broquerie, Laurier, Notre-Dame-de-Lourdes, Saint-Laurent, Saint-Jean-Baptiste, Saint-François-Xavier, and Grande-Clairière, among many others.
The province also has many Francophiles who come from, among other places, the numerous immersion schools.
